MadeIndia ASW Craft ‘Malvan’ to Join Indian Navy Fleet

The Indian Navy is set to commission ‘Malvan’, the latest Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), in a significant boost to India’s coastal defence and maritime security capabilities. The commissioning marks another milestone in the country’s drive towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Designed specifically for anti-submarine warfare operations in coastal and shallow waters, Malvan is equipped with advanced underwater sensors, sophisticated sonar systems, lightweight torpedoes, and modern anti-submarine weaponry. The vessel is capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralising underwater threats while also undertaking maritime surveillance, search and rescue, and low-intensity maritime operations.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, with a high percentage of indigenous content, Malvan showcases India’s growing capability in designing and constructing advanced naval platforms. The ship incorporates state-of-the-art navigation, communication, and combat management systems, ensuring enhanced operational effectiveness in complex maritime environments.

The induction of Malvan will significantly strengthen the Indian Navy’s ability to safeguard India’s vast coastline, protect critical sea lanes, and respond swiftly to emerging underwater threats in the Indian Ocean Region. The vessel will play a crucial role in maintaining maritime security and enhancing the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare preparedness.

The commissioning of Malvan reflects the Government’s continued focus on modernising the armed forces through indigenous defence production and reducing dependence on imported military platforms. As the latest addition to the Navy’s expanding fleet, Malvan is expected to enhance India’s maritime deterrence and operational readiness while reinforcing the country’s position as a leading naval power in the Indo-Pacific region.
