Indian Army gets its first hydrogen bus

The Indian Army has tied up with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for trials of hydrogen fuel cell bus technology, demonstrating its determination towards finding green and sustainable transport solutions. The Indian Army is known for its commitment towards innovation and environmental stewardship.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Indian Army and Indian Oil Corporation Limited in the presence of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Manoj Pandey and Chairman, Indian Oil Corporation Limited Shri Shrikant Madhav Vaidya. During the event, a Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered bus was handed over to the Indian Army. This marks the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership between Indian Army and Indian Oil Corporation Limited. The MoU emphasises commitment to foster innovation and pursue sustainable transport solutions for the future.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology provides a clean and efficient alternative to electrical energy by converting hydrogen gas into electricity through an electro-chemical process. This process leaves water vapor as the only emitted substance and thus ensures zero emissions. The hydrogen fuel cell bus has a seating capacity of 37 passengers. It offers an impressive mileage of 250-300 km on a full 30 kg onboard tank of hydrogen fuel.

The Indian Army has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with National Thermal Power Corporation Renewable Energy Limited on 21 March 2023, specifically for setting up a green hydrogen-based microgrid power plant on the northern borders of the country. It has become the first government entity to do so. Apart from this, a pilot project is being launched in Chushul, where a 200 kW green hydrogen-based microgrid will provide 24×7 clean power to the soldiers deployed in difficult terrain and difficult climatic conditions.

With a focus on innovation and environmental responsibility, the hydrogen fuel cell based bus effort between the Indian Army and Indian Oil Corporation Limited represents a significant advancement. This initiative paves the way for clean and green transportation solutions.
